Biography

Clyde Petersen, a talented artist born in 1980 and currently based in Washington, USA, is a multifaceted creative force, working across various mediums including film, animation, music, installation, and performance.

As a Northwest artist, Clyde is dedicated to recreating lost worlds and documenting cultures that have been largely erased by the devastating impact of AIDS, capitalism, and gentrification. Through his work, he seeks to offer alternative, more equitable realities and futures by reexamining overlooked histories.

Clyde's creative process is characterized by his meticulous attention to detail and his commitment to storytelling. He animates his films at a slow and patient pace, often working on just a few seconds of footage a day. He also gathers new oral histories and builds scale-model worlds to bring his stories to life.

One of Clyde's most notable collaborations was with the Northwest band Earth, with whom he worked for five years to create the documentary film Even Hell has its Heroes. This feature film, shot entirely on Super 8mm, is set to premiere in 2023.

Clyde is also the director of the stop-motion animated feature film Torrey Pines, which premiered in 2016 and toured the world for two years, accompanied by his band, Your Heart Breaks. This autobiographical film tells the story of Clyde's experiences growing up with a schizophrenic mother as a queer youth in the early 1990s.

Currently, Clyde is working on a new feature film entitled Our Forbidden Country, a stop-motion animated film that explores the history of gay cruising in pre-AIDS Seattle.

In addition to his film work, Clyde has also created large-scale installations that transport viewers into the landscapes of his films. These installations, made entirely of cardboard, fill the room and surround his film projections, immersing the audience in his creative world.

Through his diverse body of work, Clyde Petersen continues to push the boundaries of storytelling and artistic expression, offering a unique perspective on the world around us.
