Christine Cavanaugh, born Christine Josephine Sandberg, was a talented American actress from Layton, Utah. She rose to prominence as a prolific voice actress in the 1990s, lending her voice to numerous films and television series.
Born in 1963, Cavanaugh grew up in a bedroom community for the Hill Air Force Base, one of the largest employers in Utah. Her parents, Waldo Eugene Sandberg and Rheta Mason, were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
In 1985, Cavanaugh married Kevin James Cavanaugh, keeping his surname throughout her career. The marriage ended in divorce within a few years, and she never remarried. She began her voice acting career around 1988, making a guest appearance on the live-action sitcom "Cheers" in 1990.
However, it was her voice acting roles that brought her the most success in the 1990s. She voiced iconic characters such as Gosalyn Waddlemeyer-Mallard in "Darkwing Duck," Chuckie Finster in "Rugrats," Bunnie Rabbot in "Sonic the Hedgehog," Oblina in "Aaahh!!! Real Monsters," Martin Sherman in "The Critic," Babe in the film "Babe," Dexter in "Dexter's Laboratory," and Bamm-Bamm Rubble in "Cave Kids."
In addition to her voice work, Cavanaugh made a memorable guest appearance on the science fiction series "The X-Files" in 1997. She played Amanda Nelligan, a woman impregnated by a shape-shifter.
Cavanaugh abruptly retired from acting in 2001, for personal reasons. Previously recorded episodes featuring her voice continued to be released until 2003. She was replaced by Nancy Cartwright as the voice of Chuckie Finster and Candi Milo as the voice of Dexter.
Cavanaugh lived in retirement until her death in December 2014. She passed away at her home in Cedar City, Utah, at the age of 51, without revealing the cause of death. Her remains were cremated, and her ashes were scattered into the Great Salt Lake, the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere.
