Nyby's educational journey commenced with his graduation from Van Nuys High School in California in 1959, prompting him to embark on a road trip to north central Idaho, where he was drawn to the University of Idaho by a friend. He spent two years at the institution, actively participating in the swim team and the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, before transferring to the University of Southern California.
