Born Christopher Sarandon, Jr. in Beckley, West Virginia, to restaurateurs Cliffie (Cardullias) and Christopher Sarandon, Sr. of Greek heritage on both sides. He grew up in a musical family, appearing locally on stage and playing drums and singing back-up with a local band called The Teen Tones. After touring with his band, he attended West Virginia University, majoring in speech, and later earned a master's degree in theater from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, where he met his first wife, Susan Sarandon.

Chris began his professional career in regional theater productions, making his debut in "The Rose Tattoo" in 1965. He joined the Long Wharf Theatre Company for a season before moving to New York in 1968. He landed the role of Dr. Tom Halverson on the daytime soap Guiding Light and went on to appear in various theater productions, including Broadway shows such as "The Rothchilds" and "Two Gentlemen from Verona."

Chris made his film debut in "Dog Day Afternoon" (1975),earning a New York Film Critics award and Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for his supporting turn. He went on to appear in a range of films, including "Lipstick" (1976),"The Sentinel" (1977),"The Day Christ Died" (1980),"A Tale of Two Cities" (1980),and "Protocol" (1984).

In the 1980s, Chris became known for his memorable performances in films such as "Fright Night" (1985),"The Princess Bride" (1987),and "Child's Play" (1988). He continued to work steadily in film and television throughout the 1990s and 2000s, appearing in films such as "American Perfekt" (1997),"Edie & Pen" (1996),and "Let the Devil Wear Black" (1999).
