Charlie Barnett, a talented individual, initially gained recognition during the late 1970s and early 1980s, as he consistently performed numerous shows of raunchy comedy daily in outdoor parks within New York City, particularly in Washington Square Park, where he competed for crowds with musicians, Frisbee players, jugglers, and other entertainers.
Among the select group of street performers, Charlie was uniquely able to captivate the audience by "filling the fountain," a prestigious amphitheater situated in a large circular fountain, within Washington Square Park.
In September 1980, Barnett underwent an audition for Saturday Night Live, with producer Jean Doumanian poised to offer him a spot in the cast. However, after a last-minute audition, Barnett's position was unexpectedly assigned to Eddie Murphy instead.
Following his last film appearance in the 1996 film "They Bite," Charlie Barnett passed away that same year due to complications related to AIDS. He had contracted HIV through his history of heroin abuse.
It is worth noting that comedian Dave Chappelle has openly acknowledged Charlie Barnett as a significant influence on his own career.
