Biography

Carrie Cracknell is a prominent British theatre director who has made a significant impact in the industry. She recently completed filming her debut feature film, an adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion, for Netflix and MRC, starring Dakota Johnson, which is set to be released on Netflix in 2022.

Carrie's most recent play, Sea Wall/A Life, was nominated for four Tony Awards, including Best Play, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Sturridge, and Best Sound Design in a Play for Daniel Kluger.

During her university days, Carrie co-founded a production company called Hush with her friends, including actor Ruth Wilson and producer James Erskine. Their first show was transferred to New York and London while they were still studying.

At the age of 26, Carrie became the youngest Artistic Director in Britain when she and Natalie Abrahami took over The Gate Theatre in Notting Hill, which they ran for five years. During her tenure, she directed extensively and oversaw the production of her first dance/theatre collaboration, I Am Falling, which transferred to Sadler's Wells and was nominated for a South Bank Show Award.

After leaving The Gate, Carrie created her iconic production of A Doll's House, which ran twice at the Young Vic before transferring to the Duke of York's in the West End and BAM in New York. The production earned her a nomination for the Evening Standard Best Director Award.

Carrie's work has also extended to opera, as she directed Berg's Wozzeck for the English National Opera at the Coliseum, which was nominated for an Olivier Award and an International Opera Award.

In 2019, she directed Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Sturridge in Seawall/A Life at The Public and on Broadway.

Carrie has a long-standing collaboration with the National Theatre, where her credits include her acclaimed productions of Medea, A Deep Blue Sea, Blurred Lines, and Julie, starring Vanessa Kirby.

Her other credits include Macbeth and Electra at the Young Vic, Birdland and Pigeons at the Royal Court, Oil at the Almeida, A Doll's House and Stacy at the National Theatre of Scotland.

Throughout her career, Carrie has held various positions, including Associate Director at the Young Vic and the Royal Court Theatre, and a member of the board at the Almeida Theatre.
