Cathal Joseph Patrick Smyth, better known as Chas Smash, is an iconic figure in the British music scene, renowned for his multifaceted talents as the Master Of Ceremonies, Chief Nutty Dancer, trumpet player, and co-vocalist in the highly acclaimed band Madness. With an impressive 21 UK Top 20 singles to their credit, Madness is widely regarded as the masters of the pop video.
As a celebrated songwriter, Cathal has received two prestigious Ivor Novello awards for his work on the hit single "Our House," co-written with Madness guitarist Chris Foreman, and for Outstanding Song Collection with the rest of the band.
During Madness' hiatus from 1986 to 1992, Cathal pursued a career in the music industry, serving as an A&R man at Go! Discs. In 2001, he founded his own record label, RGR Ltd.
In a new venture, Cathal has collaborated with the band to create a musical adaptation of their hit song "Our House," which premiered at the Cambridge Theatre in London's West End on October 21, 2002. This fictional "London Love Story" features a blend of the band's popular hits, woven into a narrative inspired by the films Sliding Doors and It's A Wonderful Life.
As part of the musical's development, Madness is currently recording two new songs. The band will embark on a 9-date UK Arena tour, commencing on December 11, 2002.
