Buddy DeSylva was a prolific songwriter, composer, producer, publisher, and author who was educated at the University of Southern California. He began his career by writing songs for various Broadway musicals, including "Sinbad", "Sally", and "The French Doll". In 1925, he teamed up with Lew Brown and Ray Henderson to form a songwriting and music publishing partnership.
DeSylva's Broadway stage scores included "La La Lucille", "Bombo", "Orange Blossoms", and "The Yankee Princess". He also co-librettist for "Good News", "Hold Everything", and "Flying High". In addition, he produced and co-librettist for the Broadway musicals "DuBarry Was a Lady" and "Panama Hattie".
In 1929, DeSylva sold his publishing firm and moved to Hollywood, where he became a co-producer at Paramount Pictures from 1941 to 1944. His film biography was titled "The Best Things in Life Are Free".
DeSylva was a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) and collaborated with many notable musicians, including Gus Kahn, Al Jolson, George Gershwin, and Jerome Kern. He wrote many popular songs, including "April Showers", "Button Up Your Overcoat", "Look for the Silver Lining", "California, Here I Come", and "The Best Things in Life Are Free".
