Birgitte Stærmose, a renowned Danish film director, boasts an impressive educational background, having spent 14 years residing in the United States. Her early success in creating award-winning short films earned her numerous accolades, including nominations for the European Film Academy's Best Short Film award, as well as wins at esteemed festivals such as Berlin, Rotterdam, Melbourne International Film Festival, Stockholm International Film Festival, Dokufest, and the Danish Academy Award for Best Documentary for her film Out of Love.
Stærmose's debut feature, Room 304, premiered internationally in the main competition at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where it received an award for its score. The film was subsequently released in cinemas across Denmark. Additionally, she collaborated as a co-writer on the feature film The Idealist, directed by Christina Rosendahl.
In 2015, Stærmose directed three episodes of the Danish TV2 drama series Norskov, which aired in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the UK, the Benelux countries, and the United States. Her second feature, Darling, a drama set in the Royal Danish Ballet, was written by Kim Fupz Aakeson and produced by Peter Ålbæk of Zentropa Productions. The film starred Danica Curcic, Gustaf Skarsgård, and Ulrich Thomsen, and premiered in Danish cinemas during the fall of 2017, with its international world premiere taking place at the BFI London Film Festival 2017.
Danica Curcic received a nomination for Best Actress from the Danish Film Academy and the Bodil award, presented by the Danish Film Critics, for her performance in Darling. Stærmose has also made a significant impact in television, serving as the first block director on the Starz series The Spanish Princess and the Julian Fellowes Netflix Original series The English Game.
