Bertolt Brecht

Bertolt Brecht, a renowned German poet, playwright, and screenwriter, was born on February 10, 1898, in the city of Augsburg, Germany. This influential literary figure is widely recognized for his groundbreaking works, which include the iconic musical "The Threepenny Opera," a collaboration with composer Kurt Weill. However, Brecht's impressive repertoire also comprises equally successful dramas such as "Mother Courage and Her Children" and "The Good Person of Sezuan." As an outspoken opponent of the rising Nazi movement, Brecht fled Germany in 1933 and eventually emigrated to the United States. Following his testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947, he left Hollywood and returned to Europe. After settling in East Germany, Brecht founded the renowned "Berliner Ensemble" and became the intellectual hero of the state. Tragically, his life was cut short when he passed away on August 14, 1956, in East Berlin.
