Bert Dodson's illustrious career in show business began with his membership in the renowned western band, The Light Crust Doughboys. He later found himself working alongside fellow musicians Fred S. Martin and Jerry Scoggins at a radio station, fostering a strong bond among the trio. This camaraderie ultimately led to the formation of The Cass County Boys, with Bert handling the bass, Fred expertly playing the accordion, and Jerry skillfully strumming the guitar.
As World War II unfolded, legendary cowboy star Gene Autry, stationed at Love Field Airbase, stumbled upon the group's captivating performance. Impressed by their talent, he extended an offer for them to join his radio show and appear in his films. Following Bert's release from his service in the Marine Corps, the trio, now reunited, teamed up with Autry in the 1946 production, Sioux City Sue.
Interestingly, Bert had previously collaborated with Autry in the 1936 film, Oh, Susanna!, where he was credited as a member of The Light Crust Doughboys. Bert, Fred, and Jerry continued to work alongside Autry, while also having the opportunity to collaborate with renowned artists Bing Crosby and Dick Haymes.
