Bernardo Bertolucci, the renowned Italian filmmaker, was born in the charming city of Parma, Italy, where his creative journey would soon unfold. Before embarking on a career in the world of cinema, Bertolucci first attended Rome University, where he honed his skills and developed a passion for poetry, eventually gaining recognition as a talented wordsmith. As his creative horizons expanded, Bertolucci's professional trajectory led him to serve as an assistant director for the esteemed Pier Paolo Pasolini in the film Accattone, released in 1961. This invaluable experience laid the groundwork for his directorial debut, The Grim Reaper, which premiered in 1962. Bertolucci's second film, Before the Revolution, was initially released in 1964, but it wasn't until 1971 that it garnered widespread acclaim, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Furthermore, Bertolucci's mastery of his craft was acknowledged with an Academy Award nomination for Best Director for his iconic film Last Tango in Paris, released in 1972. His crowning achievement, however, came with the film The Last Emperor, which earned him dual Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Screenplay, ultimately walking away with a staggering nine Academy Awards in 1987.
