Bernard Malamud, a renowned American writer, was born in Brooklyn, New York, in the year 1914. He pursued his higher education at the City College of New York, where he earned his undergraduate degree, and later at Columbia University, from which he graduated with a Master's degree in 1942.
Following his graduation, Malamud spent most of the decade teaching English at a high school, before being offered a position as a Professor of English at Oregon State College, which he accepted.
In 1952, he penned his first novel, "The Natural", which, although it didn't garner significant attention initially, laid the groundwork for his future literary endeavors. His second novel, "The Assistant", released in 1957, met with greater success, selling well and introducing him to the public sphere.
In 1959, Malamud's literary talents earned him the prestigious National Book Award for fiction. As the 1960s unfolded, he rode the wave of interest in authors exploring Jewish traditions and the Jewish experience in the United States. In 1964, he was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Sciences.
Malamud's subsequent novels, "A New Life" (1961) and "Idiots First" (1963),received a mixed reception, but his following novel, "The Fixer", published in 1967, won him both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. The novel was also adapted into a successful film, "The Fixer", in 1968.
From 1966 to 1968, Malamud served as a visiting lecturer at Harvard University, further solidifying his reputation as a prominent literary figure.
