Born in the city of Cheng Du, southern China, she embarked on her acting career at the tender age of 14. Prior to her professional journey, she spent three years in a performance troupe within the Chinese People's Liberation Army, entertaining soldiers stationed in Tibet.
Her breakthrough performance came when she won the lead role opposite Richard Gere in Jon Avnet's Red Corner (1997),earning her numerous accolades, including the prestigious Breakthrough Performance Award from the National Board of Review and the Discovery Star award from the Hollywood Women's Press Club for their Golden Apple Awards.
