Biography

Nora Lum, a talented American actress and rapper, has made a significant impact in the entertainment industry with her versatile performances. Born in New York City, Lum's early life was marked by tragedy with the passing of her mother, Tia, a painter and South Korean immigrant, when she was just four years old. She was raised by her father, Wally, and his grandparents in Forest Hills, Queens, where she developed a strong bond with her grandmother.

Lum's paternal great-grandfather, a Chinese immigrant who arrived in the United States in the 1940s, played a significant role in shaping her connection to her heritage. He opened the renowned Cantonese restaurant Lum's in Flushing, Queens, which was one of the first Chinese restaurants in the neighborhood.

Lum's educational background is equally impressive. She attended LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, where she honed her skills in classical music and jazz by playing the trumpet. During her college years, she adopted the stage name Awkwafina, which served as an alter ego to her quiet and reserved personality.

At the University at Albany, State University of New York, Lum majored in journalism and women's studies. Her academic pursuits were complemented by her internship experiences at local New York publications, including the Gotham Gazette and the Times Union newspaper in Albany. Additionally, she worked as a publicity assistant for publishing house Rodale.

Lum's early influences included Charles Bukowski, Anaïs Nin, Joan Didion, Tom Waits, and Chet Baker. Her passion for music and writing has been evident throughout her life, and she has released two albums, Yellow Ranger and In Fina We Trust, showcasing her rap skills.

In addition to her music career, Lum has ventured into comedy and hosting, making television appearances on Girl Code, Future Man, and Saturday Night Live. Her leading role in the comedy-drama The Farewell earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress nomination, solidifying her status as a talented and versatile actress.

Throughout her journey, Lum has been open about her experiences and influences, crediting her grandmother and her paternal great-grandfather for their significant impact on her life. Her story serves as a testament to the power of perseverance, creativity, and self-discovery.
