Biography

Austin Stoker, a renowned African-American actor, has been recognized for his outstanding performances since the 1970s. Born and raised in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, West Indies, Stoker's passion for the performing arts was ignited at a young age.

Since the tender age of six, he was an ardent participant in the over 200-year-old Trinidadian carnival, widely regarded as "The World's Most Colorful Festival". This exposure instilled in him a deep appreciation for the arts, which would later shape his career.

At 16, Stoker's dream was to attend the prestigious London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. Although this aspiration was not realized, fate intervened when he was invited to join the Geoffrey Holder Dance Group in his hometown of Trinidad. This opportunity brought him to New York and landed him a role in a Broadway show, where he showcased his skills as a steel drum player, an instrument invented in Trinidad.

As an accomplished percussionist and singer, Stoker worked with the group for three years, performing in concerts and clubs. His journey was interrupted when he was drafted into the US Army. Upon his return to civilian life, he became a permanent US resident and began his dramatic training at New York's HB Studio.

Under the guidance of the esteemed Uta Hagen, Stoker received a scholarship, which marked the beginning of his formal training. His early on-screen appearances included roles in Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973) and Airport 1975 (1974). These performances caught the attention of several directors, leading to his lead roles in the exploitation thrillers The Get-Man (1974) and Abby (1974).

Stoker's breakthrough performance as Lt. Ethan Bishop in John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) cemented his status as a leading man. He went on to take co-star and supporting roles in films like Time Walker (1982) and made numerous guest appearances on popular television shows.

Although his film appearances have been less frequent in recent years, Stoker continues to work on stage, solidifying his reputation as a talented and dedicated actor.
