Biography

Audra Ann McDonald was born on July 3, 1970, in Berlin, Germany, to a family with a strong educational background. Her mother was a university administrator, and her father was a high school principal stationed in West Berlin with the U.S. Army. She has a younger sister and grew up in Fresno, California.

McDonald's early life was marked by a passion for the performing arts, which was nurtured through her education. She graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School and went on to study classical singing at the prestigious Juilliard School, from which she graduated in 1993.

Her professional career began to take shape in the early 1990s, when she won her first Tony Award for her role in Carousel in 1994. This was just the beginning of her long and illustrious career, which would see her go on to win a total of six Tony Awards.

In addition to her work on Broadway, McDonald has also released several albums, including her debut solo album Way Back to Paradise in 1998. She has also been recognized for her work in television, earning an Emmy Award nomination for her role in Wit (2001).
