Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, his father was a doctor and his mother a nurse. His grandmother came from a mining colliery family, while his grandfather was from Northumbrian gentry. He trained at Derwentside College, winning the Rotary Prize for Dramatic Art, and later at GSA, where he won a prize for his choreography and the School Cup for Best Actor.
He was spotted by Patricia Marmont and Rose Streatfield of Marmont Management, who guided him through his first 10 years of work. Known for his versatility, he has worked in every genre, appearing in theatre, film, and television.
