Biography

Anthony Rizzo, the director of the iconic cold war civil defense film "Duck and Cover", is often overlooked despite his remarkable contribution to popular culture. This mini-biography aims to shed light on Rizzo's life and career, starting with his early years in Chicago where he dreamed of becoming an opera singer before serving as a radio operator in World War II.

After the war, Rizzo studied at Northwestern University and the Chicago Conservancy of Music and Dramatic Arts, before moving to New York City to work at Archer Productions, Inc. In 1951, Archer won a bid to produce several civil defense films for the U.S. Government, including "Duck and Cover", which has become a cult classic.

Rizzo also directed another civil defense film, "Our Cities Must Fight", which advised viewers on the importance of staying and fighting in the event of an atom bombing. However, this film never achieved the same level of recognition as "Duck and Cover". After leaving Archer, Rizzo worked in advertising, writing, producing, and directing commercials for prestigious agencies such as Ogilvy, Benson & Mather.

In addition to his advertising work, Rizzo performed in regional theater under the stage name "Tony Rainer". He later switched careers to work in real estate, a career that spanned many years until his retirement. Anthony Rizzo passed away in 2004 at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy that includes "Duck and Cover", a film that has become synonymous with the paranoid era of the 1950s and 1960s.
