Anne Frank was born in Germany in 1929 and spent her early years in Germany and Amsterdam. Tragedy struck in 1942 when she and her family were forced to go into hiding to escape the persecution of the Jews by Hitler. They joined another family and a dentist in a secret annex behind her father's office building, where Anne kept a daily diary that chronicled their struggles and triumphs. Her diary entries also revealed her innermost thoughts, including her conflicts with her mother, her budding romance with a boy her age, and her own maturation.
