Ann Lu is a Chinese American filmmaker who was born and raised in Chengdu, China. She later moved to the United States to attend college in Tennessee, where she earned a bachelor's degree in mass communications.
After completing her studies, Lu relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a career in directing. Her critically acclaimed feature debut, Dreamers, is a coming-of-age drama that tells the story of two childhood friends who leave their small-town life behind to chase their dreams in the big city.
Dreamers was an official selection at eight international film festivals and won numerous awards, including accolades for Director, Screenwriter, Cinematographer, Best Picture, and Audience Choice Awards. Following its successful theatrical release, the film was made available on DVD and through various rental and sell-through platforms, including Best Buy, Hollywood Video, Amazon, and Netflix.
Lu's second feature film, Erosion, is a thought-provoking exploration of love and death. The Los Angeles Times praised the film as "sensual and bold," while Variety described it as "an erotic walk on the wild side." Erosion was an official selection at four international film festivals and received several awards. The film was released on DVD and made available through specialized retail and Amazon, as well as on Netflix.
Lu's latest film, 20:16, is a Chinese-language film inspired by real events surrounding the Great Escape to Hong Kong from mainland China during the Cultural Revolution. The film was released in China and Hong Kong by China Film Group in May 2017.
