Andre Morgan is a renowned film and television producer, with an illustrious career spanning multiple decades and continents.
Born in a French military hospital in Rabat, Morocco, while his father served in the U.S. Navy, Morgan's childhood was marked by frequent moves to different countries, including Europe, England, and the United States. He eventually settled in Overland Park, Kansas, where he attended the University of Kansas with a triple major in Chinese History, Asian Studies, and Mandarin.
In 1972, Morgan left for Hong Kong to serve a one-year internship with Golden Harvest, a fledgling motion picture company. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming an assistant marketing manager, vice president of international operations, and eventually, a partner and CEO.
Under Morgan's strategic planning, Golden Harvest expanded its content beyond the Hong Kong and Chinese-speaking market, opening offices in L.A., London, and Mexico City, and successfully negotiating the acquisition of several cinema circuits. He played a crucial role in launching the international careers of legendary figures such as Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and John Woo.
In 1984, Morgan sold his interest in Golden Harvest and turned his attention to Hollywood, co-founding the Ruddy Morgan Organization (RMO) with Albert S. Ruddy, producer of The Godfather. The RMO became the longest-running and most successful independent production company in the entertainment world, producing over 40 films and 400 hours of television.
Morgan also managed a variety of talent for RMO, helping to shape the career trajectories of notable figures such as Peter Chan, Sammo Hung, Stanley Tong, and Academy Award-winning cinematographer Dean Semler.
In 2000, Morgan returned to China, where he was invited by the Chinese government to expand RMO's global reach. He founded Hweilai Studios in Shanghai, the first private sector studio in China, which became the hub of top-flight Chinese productions and the home for English-language movies and television produced in Shanghai.
Since launching RMO in China in 1999, Morgan has achieved several firsts while producing many well-received films. He has Executive Produced Flatland, the first Sino-American television series, and The White Countess, the first Sino-American film co-production. His production of Perhaps Love, the first Chinese musical in 25 years, was chosen as Hong Kong's 2006 Oscar entry and won 22 international awards.
Today, Morgan continues to be a frequent panelist and guest speaker for both media and business forums, and sits on the Advisory Board of the Asia World Film Festival and is Vice-Chairman of the Chinese-American Film Festival. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and Writers Guild of America.
Morgan is a partner in Siren Films Ltd. of Shanghai and Morgan & Chan Films of Hong Kong, and is the CEO of Windsong Pictures in Los Angeles. He has half a dozen projects currently in the works, including the relaunch of Cannonball Run with Warner Bros. and Doolittle with Perfect Village.
