However, her family's lifestyle as teachers allowed them to relocate to the Middle East for a stint, where Amy's parents taught at the American School. This experience was not unique, as Amy's family would later embark on numerous summer road trips across the United States, camping in every state except Alaska.
Amy's artistic talents were evident from an early age, as she acted in school productions and won writing contests. Her athletic prowess was also notable, as she placed in the first-ever 3200 meter relay in Illinois girls' track. After an injury in college, Amy returned to the theater, taking on various roles on stage and even directing a production.
Amy attended Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, where she graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in East Asian history and a concentration in Theater. Following graduation, she moved to Chicago and honed her improv skills at the Improv Olympic and acting skills at The Actor's Center.
Amy's early career was marked by a contract job on the now-defunct soap opera Another World, which led her to New York City. She has since been nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for her work on the show. Amy has gone on to play strong, memorable characters in various TV shows, including Alex Taylor in Third Watch, Maggie Pistone in Falcone, Katie Owen in Peacemakers, and Linda Reagan in Blue Bloods.
In addition to her acting career, Amy is also a part-owner of the independent record label Frenchkiss Records, which she co-founded with her husband, Syd Butler, the bassist of Les Savy Fav. Amy and her husband reside in New York City, where she continues to write and seek out diverse and unique roles in the film industry.
Amy's early life was marked by a sense of adventure, as she backpacked through Europe with her family and later traveled to Rwanda to aid relief efforts following the war. Her parents' influence also played a significant role in shaping her artistic talents, as they encouraged her to pursue her passions from a young age.
