Amrita Bagchi grew up in Alipore and Jadavpur, West Bengal, and attended school in three cities: Kolkata, Patna, Ahmedabad, and back to Kolkata. Her father, a bank employee and professor at a financial institution, frequently moved around for work, resulting in the family switching cities and education boards. This led to Amrita switching from ICSE to CBSE in Ahmedabad, where she struggled to adapt to Sanskrit, a subject she had never studied before.
After returning to Kolkata for her final year of school, Amrita joined Loreto House and discovered her passion for arts during her twelfth standard. She then pursued Fine Arts with Painting and Sculpture at Shanti Niketan, Kala Bhavana, but eventually left after one year to join the National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad, where she studied Graphic Design.
After completing her education, Amrita moved to Mumbai and started working in designing houses and television. She then began freelancing and transitioned to stage designing for theatre groups like Motley. Shanti Niketan had provided her with training in Bengali Folk Music and Rabindra Sangeet, which ultimately led her to act in a play called "Colour Blind" and then full-time.
In 2015, Amrita was approached to play the lead in "Mrinal Ki Chitthi" for EPIC channel, based on Tagore's story "Streer Potro". She continued to work in television, but faced rejection and criticism for her looks and age, leading her to plan a backup option and start writing.
In 2020, Amrita released a music video on her YouTube channel, titled "Bematlab", which she wrote, composed, and sang. She also directed the video herself, with the help of friends and Rupesh Tillu, a trained clown. In 2022, Amrita made her first short film, "Succulent", with Merenla Imsong. The film won the "Audience Award for Best First Film" at the 10th Dharamshala International Film Festival and the first prize at the 2023 Bengaluru International Short Film Festival.
Amrita's journey in the arts has been marked by challenges, rejections, and self-discovery, but she has continued to pursue her passions and explore new forms of art, ultimately finding success in multiple fields.
