Amit Khanna was born on March 1, 1951, in Delhi, where he was educated at St. Columba's and St. Stephen's. As a child, he was already involved in the media, with a passion that would continue to drive his career.
Khanna's professional journey began in the early 1970s, when he started working in the theatre, radio, television, and journalism. He then ventured into film production, joining Dev Anand's Navketan in 1971 as an Executive Producer.
Throughout his career, Khanna has worn many hats. He has produced feature films, including "Man Pasand," and has written and directed critically acclaimed films such as "Sheeshay Ka Ghar" and "Shesh." He has also written over 400 film and non-film songs, as well as several film scripts.
In the 1980s, Khanna began working in television, producing and directing various shows. He was instrumental in setting up Plus Channel in 1990, which was India's first entertainment conglomerate and the largest independent producer of TV programs. During his tenure, Plus Channel pioneered several program formats and genres on Indian television and produced over 3000 hours of original programming, as well as 10 feature films and over 500 music albums.
In 2000, Khanna quit as Managing Director of Plus Channel to launch Reliance Entertainment with Reliance, India's largest corporate. He has since been working at the helm of Reliance Entertainment, heading the broadband initiative and collaborating with a team of industry professionals.
Recently, Khanna has been appointed Chairman of eEntertainment, a body formed by FICCI, NASSCOM, and TiE. He has also edited several magazines, including "Tempus" and "Take-2," and writes regularly on media-related topics for various publications.
Khanna has served on several committees and boards, including the Central Board of Film Certification, Film Import Selection Committee, and the Film Producers Guild of India. He has also been a guest lecturer at various colleges and universities and is a founder member of the Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image.
Throughout his career, Khanna has received numerous national and international awards for his contributions to the film and television industry. He is currently the President of the Film Producers Guild of India, the President of the All-India Film Producers Council, and the President of the Earth Communications Office - India Association.
