Amar Kaushik is a renowned actor and director in the Indian film industry, celebrated for crafting and directing his award-winning short film Aaba (2017). Born to a forest ranger father from Arunachal Pradesh and a school teacher mother, Kaushik's family relocated to Kanpur, U.P., when he was 10 years old, before eventually settling in Delhi. He pursued a degree in mass communication from Delhi, and subsequently moved to Mumbai in 2009.
Kaushik began his career in the Hindi film industry as an assistant director for the movie Aamir (2008). He went on to play small roles in notable films such as No One Killed Jessica (2011),Go Goa Gone (2013),and Ghanchakkar (2013). Additionally, he worked as an assistant director for prominent filmmakers like Raj Kumar Gupta and Onir.
Collaborating with Onir, Kaushik worked as an assistant director on films like Sorry Bhai! (2008),I Am (2010),and Night (2017). His short film Aaba (2017) garnered a special prize from the Generation KPlus International Jury at the Berlin International Film Festival, and also won the National Award in the category 'Best Short Fiction'. Aaba was showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Kaushik has also worked with Iranian film director Majid Majidi as an assistant director for the movie Beyond the Clouds (2017). His most popular movies include Stree (2018) and Bala (2019),with Stree becoming a blockbuster hit and earning Rs. 125.57 crores in the first 7-10 months. The movie starred Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, and earned Kaushik the best debut director award at the Filmfare Awards in 2019.
His other notable movie, Bala, starred Ayushmann Khurrana, Bhumi Pednekar, and Yami Gautam. In 2022, Kaushik released Bhediya (2022),starring Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon. He also released Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga (2023) on Netflix, featuring Yami Gautam and Sunny Kaushal.
