Alok was born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, which is now part of Serbia, to Indian parents, whose roots in the country would significantly influence his life's trajectory. His father, an executive in an airline, played a pivotal role in Alok's early years, as he was frequently relocated to various countries around the world, including France, India, Kenya, Iraq, and Oman. This nomadic lifestyle allowed Alok to develop a unique cultural perspective and adaptability, essential skills for his future endeavors.
As a young adult, Alok moved to New York in the mid-1980s, where he pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor's degree in International Management. He then embarked on a career in banking and finance, which took him on a journey across the globe, with stops in New York, Mexico, and Argentina, where he resided for five years.
During his time in Argentina, Alok had the opportunity to study with the renowned Argentine actor and director, Lorenzo Quinteros, which sparked a passion for acting within him. This experience ultimately led him to reorient his career path, and he returned to New York City to further his studies.
Alok enrolled at the Actors Studio Drama School, part of the New School University, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Acting. This marked the beginning of a successful career in the entertainment industry, with Alok working extensively in theatre, television, and film.
Throughout his journey, Alok has developed fluency in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, and Hindi, and is currently studying French.
