Biography

Allen J. Coage, a trailblazing figure in the world of judo, made history by becoming the first African American to win an Olympic Bronze medal at the 1976 Olympics, as well as the second American to bring home a medal for the USA team.

To this day, Allen Coage remains the only American heavyweight to have won an Olympic medal in judo, a testament to his remarkable skills and dedication to the sport.

In addition to his Olympic achievement, Coage also won a Gold medal for heavyweight judo at the 1967 Pan American Games and another Gold medal in the heavyweight division at the 1975 Pan American Games.

What's more, Coage was the first American to win a Gold medal in two consecutive Pan American Games, solidifying his position as a judo legend and paving the way for future generations of athletes.
