Alexey Chupov is a Russian director and scriptwriter born on May 29, 1973, in Moscow, USSR. In 1992, he became an exchange student at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, USA, where he took a course on the History of World Cinema.
After graduating from the International Department of Moscow State University's Faculty of Journalism in 1995, Chupov began his career in television and public relations. In 2008, he attended the Alexander Mitta professional course for scriptwriters and producers.
In 2013, Chupov collaborated with scriptwriter and director Natasha Merkulova on their feature film debut, 'Intimate Parts', which won several awards, including the Best Debut and Best Actress awards at the Kinotavr Film Festival in Sochi, Russia, and the Jury Prize at the Black Nights International Film Festival in Tallinn, Estonia.
'Intimate Parts' was selected in the official programs of several international film festivals, including Karlovy Vary, Busan, Gothenburg, Listopad, the Golden Apricot, Pacific Meridian, and others. Chupov and Merkulova continued to collaborate on all of Chupov's later works.
In 2016, they directed the TV series 'Tender Age Crisis' for the Russian TV channel TNT. The following year, they released the 8-episode cinematic series 'Gogol', which was theatrically released wide in Russia and achieved record-breaking box office results, including international sales to Amazon Prime Video for English-speaking territories.
Chupov and Merkulova also produced the space drama feature film 'Salyut 7', shot on IMAX 3D cameras, which won the Best Feature Film and Best Film Editing Golden Eagle awards. In 2018, they directed the feature film 'The Man Who Surprised Everyone', which won the Best Actress award at the Venice International Film Festival and was selected at several other international film festivals.
Their latest project, the action thriller series 'Call Center', premiered on TNT TV channel and was digitally released on PREMIER global SVOD platform, winning the Best Script award at the Pilot film festival in Ivanovo, Russia.
