Alex Rotaru, a renowned filmmaker, was born in Romania and began his career in film acting, earning the highest distinction available to young Romanian actors. He then pursued a degree in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating at the top of his class with a 5.0 GPA and a degree in Theoretical Physics.
Inspired by studying cinema at the Sorbonne in Paris, Alex switched gears and earned a Film Production MFA from the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts. He went on to direct several award-winning documentaries, including the New York Times Critic's Pick "They Came to Play" and SHOWTIME Networks' "Shakespeare High", produced by notable figures such as Dana Brunetti, Dean Devlin, and Kevin Spacey.
As an official U.S. Department of State cultural ambassador, Alex traveled the world, educating and entertaining through numerous cultural exchange programs. He has also been invited to serve on international film festival juries, showcasing his cultural adaptability and flexibility.
In addition to his filmmaking endeavors, Alex is often hired to write or edit screenplays, direct theatre, and teach production master classes. He is currently in post-production with his scripted narrative/experimental supernatural horror fantasy feature "Missing Time", which explores the unreliable nature of human memory and subjective reality.
Alex is also working on two feature-length biographical documentaries, "Mona/Lisa and Gonna Fly Now", which tell the stories of unsung heroines from the world of art and music. These women include NYC Drama Desk Award-nominated actor/pianist/author Mona Golabek and twice Oscar-nominated songwriter/singer Carol Connors, known for her iconic hit "Gonna Fly Now" from the film "Rocky".
Throughout his career, Alex has received numerous awards and accolades, including a Christopher Award for PBS POV's "The Hobart Shakespeareans". He is known for his ability to extract unexpected amounts of emotion from his interviewees, and has worked with prominent U.S. Poet Laureates such as Louise Glück, John Ashbury, W.S. Merwin, Anthony Hecht, and Kay Ryan.
A SAG must-join actor, Alex can be seen on stage several times a year in Shakespeare readings at The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles. He resides in Beverly Hills with his son Max.
