Before pursuing a career in film, Alexander Mitta studied engineering in 1955 and later worked as a cartoonist for art and magazines. In 1960, he graduated from the film directing faculty of the VGIK.
Mitta's innovative approach to filmmaking led him to experiment with the Western genre of catastrophe movies, adapting it to Soviet reality. His film Ekipazh, released in 1980, was a massive success, captivating millions of viewers.
In 1983, he directed his iconic film, The Story of the Voyages, starring Andrey Mironov and Tatyana Aksyuta. This landmark film showcased Mitta's exceptional storytelling abilities.
Mitta's international collaboration with British filmmakers resulted in the production of the Soviet-British political drama Lost in Siberia in 1991, starring Anthony Andrews. The film received a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 49th Golden Globe Awards.
In 2013, Mitta shot his final film, Chagall-Malevich, which explored the world of Marc Chagall and his myth within the genre of a folklore ballad. His most notable work from this period is the TV-Series Granitsa. Tayozhnyy roman, released in 2000, which remains one of his most famous creations.
