Biography

Alec James, a seasoned professional in the music industry, made a significant career shift in 1997 by pursuing a major in cinema at the University of California, San Diego. He graduated Magna cum Laude in 1999 and returned to Los Angeles, where he had previously resided from 1983 to 1996, to embark on a new journey in the film industry.

His initial foray into the business was as a Television Script Transcriber at The Transcription Company in Burbank, but his first on-set experience was a one-day stint as a freebie for an independent feature film called "Bikepath," where he was tasked with sweeping the soundstage. Despite the unconventional start, James developed a passion for the work.

This led him to seek and secure his first paid production job as a UPM/1st AD for three high-definition feature films shot in three weeks for action director Serge Rodnunsky's Rojak Films. The experience served as a valuable training ground for the demands of the film industry, and James went on to work as a Sound Editor for two of the features while supervising the sound edit of the third.

Under Rodnunsky's guidance, James learned ProTools, completed the three films, and began to explore the production department as a Production Coordinator for Hemisphere Entertainment, working on four more films. However, he found himself drawn to the creative aspects of filmmaking and preferred to be on set, actively contributing to the production process.

Producer/Director Thomas O. Hobbs introduced James to boom operating and mixing for his feature film "Tomorrow and Tomorrow" (1999),also known as "Coyote Monday." This experience, combined with his background in music, solidified James' decision to focus on the sound department. He has since worked as a mixer and occasional boom operator on various feature films, shorts, commercials, music videos, theater productions, and live events.

Today, Alec James resides in Glendale, California, and has recently worked on a range of projects, including the Lemony Snicket Behind the Scenes DVD, Spiderman 2 Behind the Scenes DVD, Taco Bell commercial, Killswitch Engage's "Rose of Sharyn" music video, the experimental short "The Story of Bob," and the independent feature film Truce (2005).
