Alanis Nadine Morissette, a renowned Canadian singer-songwriter, was born on June 1st, 1974, in Ottawa, Canada. Her Greek name, a feminine version of her father's name, Alan, reflects her cultural heritage. She is the daughter of Georgia and has two brothers, Chad and Wade, with whom she shares a special bond as twins. Alanis' introduction to music began at the tender age of six, when she learned to play the piano. Her musical journey continued at twenty-one, when she mastered the guitar.
In 1986, Alanis released her first single, "Fate Stay With Me," accompanied by the B-side "Find The Right Man." She went on to record two albums as a dance-pop singer in Canada, "Alanis" (1991) and "Now Is The Time" (1992). At the age of eighteen, she relocated to Toronto, where she collaborated with various musicians and songwriters, although these endeavors did not yield the desired results.
It wasn't until 1994 that Alanis found her ideal partner in producer and songwriter Glen Ballard, who had previously worked with notable artists such as Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, and Barbra Streisand. This partnership led to a significant turning point in her career, as she moved to Los Angeles at the age of nineteen.
On June 13th, 1995, Alanis released "Jagged Little Pill" through Madonna's Maverick Records. This album marked a significant departure from her previous work, as she explored an autobiographical and intensely personal approach to songwriting. "Jagged Little Pill" went on to sell approximately 30 million copies worldwide, cementing its status as the highest-selling female album and the third-highest selling album of all time.
Following the release of "Jagged Little Pill," Alanis experienced emotional turmoil, contemplating the possibility of not recording another album. However, she eventually found solace in a trip to India, where she had the opportunity to recharge and reconnect with her creative self. Her journey led to the creation of the song "Uninvited," which was featured on the soundtrack of the movie "City of Angels" (1998).
In the same year, Alanis released her album "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie," which included the singles "Joining You," "Unsent," and "So Pure." She also directed the music videos for these songs. In 1999, Alanis took on the role of God in the movie "Dogma" and collaborated on the soundtrack with the song "Still." Additionally, she recorded the album "MTV Unplugged" and performed on the Broadway show "The Vagina Monologues."
Today, Alanis resides in Brentwood, California, where she continues to create music that resonates with fans around the world.
