Alan Plater was born in Jarrow in 1935 and grew up in Hull. He trained as an architect in Newcastle before becoming a full-time writer in 1961. With over 200 credits in radio, television, theatre, and film, he has written six novels, journalism, and taught. His first plays were for radio, a medium he still loves.
