Biography

Al Stewart, a renowned folk-rock singer-songwriter, was born on September 9, 1945, in Glasgow, Scotland, and later grew up in the picturesque coastal resort town of Bournemouth, Dorset, England.

Stewart's musical journey began with playing guitar in Tony Blackburn's band, the Sabres, before transitioning to a solo career in the 1960s London folk club scene.

In 1966, his debut single "The Elf" failed to make a significant impact, but he persevered and released his first album "Bedsitter Images" in 1967.

The 1969 album "Love Chronicles" stirred controversy with its titular track, an 18-minute song featuring a swear word in its lyrics.

Stewart's initial albums primarily consisted of introspective, confessional love songs, but he would later shift his focus to historical tales, as evident in his 1974 album "Past, Present & Future".

This fascination with history and the past would become a recurring theme in his subsequent songs, with many of his albums exploring historical narratives.

In 1976, Stewart scored a major Top 10 hit with the haunting and lovely song "Year of the Cat", followed by the equally catchy and memorable "Time Passages" in 1978.

Although his albums during the 1980s and 1990s were commercially unsuccessful, Stewart has maintained a strong and loyal international cult following.

Throughout his career, Stewart has continued to tour and perform across Europe and the United States, and has also developed a passion for wine collecting.

In recent years, Al Stewart released the album "Sparks of Ancient Light" in September 2008, a testament to his enduring talent and dedication to his craft.
