Smoluk made history as the youngest filmmaker to be selected for the National Screen Institute's Features First Program, a prestigious honor bestowed upon him by Canada's oldest recognized film and television training school.
Prior to his success in the film industry, Smoluk studied Theatre on a full scholarship at The British American Drama Academy at Oxford University, where he honed his skills and laid the groundwork for his future endeavors.
As a seasoned producer and director, Smoluk made his debut feature film, "Horse Thieves", on a remarkably low budget. Despite the odds, the film surprisingly took home the Audience Choice Award at the 2005 Winnipeg International Film Festival, cementing Smoluk's reputation as a talented and innovative filmmaker.
Smoluk's sophomore effort, "Foodland", was acquired by Super Channel and Shaw Communications, two prominent players in the Canadian media landscape.
In October 2011, Super Channel, Canada's sole national English pay television network, premiered "Foodland" as part of their Super Channel Gems series, which showcases critically acclaimed independent films.
The film's success continued to grow, as it made its US debut on the Independent Film Channel (IFC) in March 2014, further solidifying Smoluk's position as a respected and accomplished filmmaker.
