Abraham Cahan, a convinced Socialist, was forced to immigrate to the United States in 1882, preceding the mass migration of over 2 million Jews from the Soviet Bloc between 1887 and 1914, most of whom were desperately poor. He settled on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where he became deeply concerned with the welfare of the growing Jewish population.
