The Scarlet Letter background

The Scarlet Letter

In 17th-century New England, a pregnant woman's world is upended when she discovers she's unwed, prompting a frantic quest to uncover the identity of the child's father.

In Puritan Boston, Hester Prynne, a seamstress, is punished for playing on the Sabbath day. A kind minister, Arthur Dimmesdale, takes pity on her and they fall in love, but their relationship is forbidden as Hester is already married. Dimmesdale must leave for England, and upon his return, he finds Hester pregnant with their child, now the focus of the town's scorn.
