In 1935, Father Michael McKinnon leaves the UK for Boston, where he deliberately shuns the city's prominent citizens, Arthur and Eleanor Barret. Unbeknownst to Father McKinnon, Eleanor and Arthur are struggling to conceive, as Arthur is sterile. In a desperate attempt to start a family, they enlist the help of Harvard law student Roger Martin to impregnate Eleanor. However, Roger's feelings for Eleanor soon deepen, causing complications in the situation.
