Paul Marvan, a middle-aged European pianist, is brought to America by wealthy widow Diana Fowler and soon marries Margo, a nightclub dancer. However, Margo's flirtatious behavior fuels Marvan's jealousy, and his financial and professional struggles worsen as Diana is displeased with his marriage. Marvan's attempt to collect insurance after an accident goes awry, and he is left to find solace in a Salvation Army shelter, playing the piano with one hand.
