Soul Power background

Soul Power

The film documents the Zaire 74 soul music festival, which was planned to coincide with the historic Rumble in the Jungle boxing match in Kinshasa, Zaire, in 1974.

The 1974 music festival in Africa was created by Hugh Masekela, Stewart Levine, and Don King, coinciding with Muhammad Ali and George Foreman's championship boxing match. Despite Foreman's injury, the festival went on as scheduled, featuring stage construction and the arrival of participating musicians. The event showcased African-American and local artists, including James Brown, in a unique musical experience for the people of Zaire.
