John Forbes, an insurance adjuster, is feeling unfulfilled in his life and job. His routine is disrupted when he investigates a case involving Mona Stevens, whose boyfriend has stolen from a store insured by Forbes' company. As Forbes collects the stolen gifts, he becomes infatuated with Mona and starts an affair. However, private detective MacDonald, who has his own feelings for Mona, schemes to eliminate Forbes and claim her for himself by using the soon-to-be-released boyfriend.
