As Jasira navigates her new surroundings, she faces challenges such as discovering her own sexuality, dealing with racial prejudices, and confronting unwanted advances from adults. Amidst these struggles, Jasira finds herself drawn to a forbidden romance with an African-American classmate, forcing her to confront her own agency and the inevitability of tragedy.
