Negroes with Guns: Rob Williams and Black Power

Rob Williams, a vocal advocate for racial justice in 1950s and 1960s North Carolina, defied the norm by embracing armed resistance, a stance that set him apart from his non-violent contemporaries.

In 1950s and 1960s North Carolina, African-American Rob Williams defied the non-violent resistance movement by advocating for armed self-defense against oppression. Despite being stripped of his NAACP leadership role, Williams continued to promote gun ownership among local African-Americans. Wanted for kidnapping, Williams and his wife fled to Cuba, where he broadcast his radio show, Radio Free Dixie, to parts of the United States.
