A nurse in a psychiatric ward, Mr. Patman forms strong bonds with his patients, but has little regard for the doctors. He leads a solitary life, renting a room in a house with his cat Patty, and is involved in an affair with Abadaba, the wife of the homeowners. Despite this, he has a stronger emotional and sexual connection with his colleague, Miss Peabody, who is planning to leave her job.
