Jimmie Davis, a music-loving son of a poor sharecropper, becomes a history and social-sciences professor at Dodd College in Shreveport. He is discovered by a jazz-band leader, Charlie Mitchell, who tricks him into singing on his radio show, which becomes a huge success.
