In 1922 Dublin, Jack Boyle, a middle-aged man, and his friend Joxer Daly openly support the anti-treaty side at rallies, but flee at the first sign of violence. Jack's son Johnny, a young adult, struggles with shell shock after losing the use of his right arm in battle. Meanwhile, Jack feigns injuries to avoid work, relying on others for beer and whiskey. His wife Juno, the household breadwinner, is frustrated by his lack of contribution. Their life takes a turn when their daughter Mary discovers Jack's inheritance, enough to start anew and support the family without him needing to work. However, their anticipation of an easy life is short-lived as reality sets in around them.
