In the early 1900s, a young and liberated chambermaid named Célestine arrives at a French estate, hired by the Lanlaires. She is taken to the house by the gruff gardener, Joseph, and immediately subjected to unwanted advances by Mr. Lanlaire. The stern and class-conscious Mrs. Lanlaire completes the unwelcoming atmosphere, foreshadowing a difficult future for Célestine.
