In Our Backyard background

In Our Backyard

The documentary exposes the severe environmental consequences of industrial pollution on towns surrounding St. Louis, revealing the intricate links between these communities and the notorious chemical corporation Monsanto.

A small village east of St. Louis, Sauget, was once known as Monsanto, a chemical producer responsible for creating carcinogenic chemicals like DDT and Agent Orange. The latter, used in the Vietnam War, still causes genetic mutations, skin conditions, and cancers. The company also produces Bovine Growth Hormones, banned in Europe and Canada due to its negative effects on cows and milk. Today, Monsanto is an agricultural biotech company patenting genetically altered seeds resistant to Roundup Weed Killer. Its chemical division, Solutia, has faced negative publicity and is linked to two toxic dumping sites, known as Superfund sites.
