Hell to Eternity background

Hell to Eternity

A Chicano youth joins the Marines to fight in the Battle of Saipan, motivated by a need to prove himself and safeguard his Japanese-American family, who were displaced to Manzanar following the Pearl Harbor attack.

The film tells the true story of Guy Gabaldon, a young boy from Los Angeles who was raised by a Japanese-American foster family in the 1930s. When his foster parents are interned during World War II, Gabaldon's fluency in Japanese proves invaluable as a Marine. He single-handedly convinces 800 Japanese soldiers to surrender on the island of Saipan, following the general's suicide.
